McGill Senate Resolution

2007 September

Created by Saman 16 years ago
The following resolution on the death of Governor Emeritus James Gordon Wright was read by Mrs. Sally McDougall, Board of Governors representative to the Senate. Madame Chair, Senators, Governors, Colleagues and Friends. James Gordon Wright, known to so many of our community as Jim, passed away in a tragic accident at Lac des Iles, Entrelacs, on Saturday September 1, 2007 at the age of sixty-four. Loving husband to his best friend Nancy, he is dearly missed by his son David, his daughters Kathleen and Melanie, who are here with us today, his brother George and his wife Carol, his sister Mary Wemp and her husband Ross, and his brother-in-law David McEntyre and his wife Tassy. Born in Vancouver to Isabelle and James A. Wright, Jim was educated at Upper Canada College (1961). He did his undergraduate Arts degree at McGill, graduating in 1965 and then went on to the Université Laval to obtain his law degree in 1968. In 1975, Jim married the love of his life, Nancy McEntyre, beginning a beautiful partnership providing mutual strength and joy to their lives. Jim practiced law with an emphasis on commercial real estate as a member of Martineau Walker (now Fasken Martineau) for 30 years, including two years on secondment to the Foreign Investment Review Agency as deputy director of the Compliance Branch. In 1999, Jim redirected his efforts, becoming the executive director of EPOC Montreal, an organization offering job training to disadvantaged youth. In 2003 Jim continued in his passionate support of education as the appointed director of the McGill affiliated Sauvé Scholars Foundation, providing study fellowships at McGill University to young leaders from around the world. Jim dearly appreciated his time with the Sauvé scholars, always revelling in their extraordinary accomplishments. Jim had a long and warm relationship with McGill. He was a director and officer of the Graduate Society (now the Alumni Association), was an active member and president (1992-93) of the McGill Alumni Association, and served as chair of the McGill News advisory board on three occasions. He served as a member of the Board of Governors from 1997 to 2006, both as a representative of the Alumni Association and as a Member-at-Large, serving as Vice-Chair of the Board from February 2005 to December 31, 2006. Jim contributed his time selflessly to the formal deliberations of the Board and its Committees, including the Audit and Executive Committees (among others), but equally found time for sharing his expertise, gentle wisdom and humour more informally with all those involved in governance. In honour of both his exceptional, long-standing service and commitment to the University and his ongoing contributions, he was named a Governor Emeritus in January 2007 and planned, with anticipation, to return to serve the Board and McGill on its governance committees. Jim’s commitment to service extended beyond the University, serving as President of the University Club from May 17, 2005 – May 23, 2007. In his home city of Westmount, Jim served as President of the Westmount Municipal Association, and was later elected as City Councillor from 1991-1999. He was appointed by the Government of Finland as Honourary Consul of Finland at Montreal from 1993 to 1999. In recognition of his service, he was awarded the Knight, First Class, of the Order of the Lion of Finland. Lac des Iles was Jim's favourite place to spend time with his family (both immediate and ever-extending) and his wonderful friends. He was passionate about the Lake, serving as Chair of the Wexford Foundation, an organization dedicated to preserving the ecology of Lac des Iles. We in the McGill family share our grief with all who will miss Jim Wright at the Board of Governors and at Sauvé House, as well as with his former colleagues at Fasken Martineau, many of whom were great supporters of his work at McGill and with the program at Sauvé. Our hearts go out to Nancy and their three children, Kathleen, Melanie and David, in this time of great loss and distress. We have all lost a friend.
